Jump Like Peg

by Marquis & The Rhythm Howlers

about

I wrote this about the tragedy of Peg Entwistle, a promising actress that took her own life with a leap off the H of the original Hollywood sign. She was born 114 years ago today. The first words you hear in our track are her’s, taken from her only motion picture, ‘Thirteen Women’. Her screen time was largely excised from the film due to the censorship of the day touted in the name of so called “morality”, keeping the sapphic nature of Peg’s character out of the final print. Supposedly, news of her sharply diminished screen time combined with petty drama in the local theater scene drove her to despondency, and to the then only 9 year old Hollywoodland sign. She left a note in her purse & a body on the hill.

I live in LA, just a short few miles from the Hollywood sign. This city is like this country, like this world. The pressure to succeed, to pay the bills, to be enough, to have worth equatable to a good life, it’s everywhere & it closes in on us all. It closed in for Peg Entwistle that September day in 1932.
“I’m afraid, I’m a coward
I am sorry for everything
If I had done this long ago
I would’ve saved a lot of pain”
Peg’s suicide note. Nobody should feel that way. Even alone on a hillside, all we have is each other.
This song is for her, and to remind each of us that we are enough & we’re all in this mess together.
We hope you enjoy the recording. It’s on Spotify (yeah I know, but it’s the closest thing we have to radio) and youtube. Share the song, share the love, Howl at every opportunity.

lyrics

Everybody Jump Like Peg
Throw yourself & kick your leg
Toss your head & let it shake
leap until you feel it break

I’m afraid, I’m a coward
I am sorry for everything
If I had done this long ago
I would’ve saved a lot of pain

Found my shoes, my bag & coat
At the marquee of this town
Found my sad little note
And the body I threw down

Everybody Jump Like Peg
Throw yourself & kick your leg
Toss your head & let it shake
leap until you feel it break

Married young, buried young
'Thirteen Women' you didn't see
"A charming picture" of my youth
You didn't know that girl was me

Everybody Jump Like Peg
Throw yourself & kick your leg
Toss your head & let it shake
leap until you feel it break
